Education, Experience and Modes of Treatment

Maureen McGuire completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Loyola University Maryland in 1989. After college she worked as a Teachers Aide at a school for Autism and a Rehabilitation Specialist at a Community Mental Health Program with chronically mentally ill adults. In both settings, it was the social workers who helped everyone, from the clients, to the families and the staff. She new then that was the career she was suited for. She opted to study Clinical Mental Health at the University of Maryland at Baltimore, School of Social Work and graduated in 1995. After getting her Masters in Social Work she began working with adolescents and adults at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Taylor Manor Hospital, The Board of Child Care and The Sheppard Pratt Health System. She held positions as a Clinical Social Worker, Clinical Supervisor, Therapeutic Services Director, Clinical Director and Executive Director. She valued her time working in these highly acute, long- term settings. There are few mental health issues she has not seen and treated based on these years working in inpatient, outpatient, and in residential settings. She is grateful for the ways in which these experiences prepared her for working with the adults she sees now.

Throughout her career, Maureen McGuire has prioritized using evidenced based, effective and healing therapies. She actively sought out educational opportunities that would support her in being able to provide the highest quality services to her clients. As such, beyond learning the basics in graduate school, rooted in Psychodynamic Theory, Ego Psychology and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), she has been trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS). DBT is a blend of eastern Mindfulness philosophies and CBT. The hallmark of DBT is helping people be more present in the moment, regulate emotions, tolerate periods of distress and develop interpersonal effectiveness skills. Beyond these skill based approaches, she wanted to deepen her trauma work with clients. As such, she began integrating concepts of Internal Family Systems (IFS) into sessions. IFS affords people with the opportunity to connect with themselves through a lens of self- compassion, curiosity and somatic awareness. This model allows people to unburden past traumas (large and small) and re-integrate their most tender wounds and memories by transforming pain into inner peace and wisdom.
