About Maureen McGuire

After over 20 years of work in psychiatric care organizations, I opened my private practice in 2018 serving adults from a variety of backgrounds: graduate students, professors, healthcare providers, activists, parents, artists, executives and more. My experience focuses on working with members of the LGBTQ+ community, adoptees and trauma survivors. I am dedicated to the daily effort it takes to unravel oppression in all forms. I recognize we are living during challenging times, nationally, globally and in our communities. As such, I only offer ethical care and research driven treatment interventions to help clients.

This is dynamic time in the field of mental health and psychiatry with enormous amounts data coming out rapidly about the impact of all of our daily routines- exercise, diet, meditation, yoga, our nervous system to the use of psychedelics in the treatment of depression, anxiety, ADHD and PTSD. This tsunami of information may be overwhelming to sort through and I am committed to helping you navigate the best path forward for your care.

Education, Experience and Modes of Treatment

I completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Loyola University Maryland in 1989. After college I worked as a Teachers Aide at a school for Autism and a Rehabilitation Specialist at a Community Mental Health Program with chronically mentally ill adults. I studied Clinical Mental Health at the University of Maryland at Baltimore, School of Social Work and graduated in 1995. After getting my Masters in Social Work I worked with adolescents and adults at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Taylor Manor Hospital, The Board of Child Care and The Sheppard Pratt Health System. I held positions as a Clinical Social Worker, Clinical Supervisor, Therapeutic Services Director, Clinical Director and Executive Director. I valued my time working in these highly acute, long- term settings. There are few mental health issues I have not seen and treated based on these years working in inpatient, outpatient, and in residential settings. I am grateful for the ways in which these experiences helped prepare me for working with the adults I sees now.

Throughout my career, I have prioritized using evidenced based, effective therapies. As such, beyond learning the basics in graduate school, rooted in Psychodynamic Theory, Ego Psychology and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I sought advanced training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Somatic IFS. DBT is a blend of Buddhist Mindfulness philosophies and CBT. The hallmark of DBT is helping people be more present in the moment, ride the wave of emotions and develop interpersonal effectiveness skills. Beyond these skill based approaches, I wanted to deepen my trauma work with clients. As such, I shifted to Internal Family Systems (IFS) and SIFS. IFS and SIFS afford people with the opportunity to connect with their thoughts, feelings, body sensations and memories through a lens of self- compassion, curiosity and somatic awareness. These models allow people to unburden past traumas (large and small) and re-integrate their most tender wounds and memories by transforming pain into wisdom, confidence and courage.
